Cenotes with an Adrenaline Rush

For some visitors, floating in crystal-clear water is enough. For others, the cenote is better when you arrive by zip line, jump off a cliff, or rappel down a cave wall to reach the water. The Yucatán has a growing number of cenote adventure parks that combine the natural beauty of cenotes with adventure activities — zip lines, rope swings, cliff platforms, and more.

Here's where to find them.

Zip Line Cenotes

Cenote X'Canché — Ek Balam

A community-managed cenote just a short walk from the Ek Balam ruins. X'Canché has a zip line that launches from the jungle canopy and drops you into the cenote, plus a rope swing for a more low-key entry. The cenote itself is a beautiful semi-open pool surrounded by jungle. After your swim, walk to the ruins and climb the Acropolis — one of the best-preserved Maya facades in the Yucatán.

Activities: Zip line, rope swing, rappelling. Price: ~200 MXN (cenote entry + activities). Location: Ek Balam, Yucatán.

Cenote Zacil-Ha — Tulum

A small, friendly cenote near Tulum with a zip line over the water. Zacil-Ha is less dramatic than the big-name Tulum cenotes but has a relaxed, community feel and the zip line adds a fun element. It's a good warm-up cenote if you're doing several in a day.

Activities: Zip line. Price: ~200 MXN. Location: Near Tulum, on the road to Cobá.

Cenote Punta Laguna — Cobá

Part of a nature reserve where you can spot spider monkeys, kayak on a jungle lagoon, and zip line into a cenote. The reserve is community-run and the guides are knowledgeable about the local wildlife. The cenote and zip line are secondary to the nature experience, but the combination is unique.

Activities: Zip line, kayaking, guided nature walk. Price: ~250 MXN (includes reserve entry and guide). Location: 20 km north of Cobá.

Cenote Yokdzonot — Near Chichén Itzá

A community-run cenote between Chichén Itzá and Valladolid with a zip line that crosses the open sinkhole. The cenote is deep and circular with blue-green water. The cooperative that manages the site has invested in safe equipment and the zip line is well-maintained.

Activities: Zip line. Price: ~100 MXN. Location: On the old highway between Pisté and Valladolid.

Adventure Park Cenotes

Cenote Aktun Chen — Akumal

A full adventure park built around a cave system and cenote. Aktun Chen offers zip lines through the jungle canopy, a guided cave walk past stalactite formations, and swimming in a cenote at the end of the cave tour. The operation is well-run with proper safety equipment and bilingual guides.

Activities: Zip line circuit, guided cave tour, cenote swim. Price: ~800–1,200 MXN (depends on package). Location: Between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Kantun Chi Cenotes — Puerto Aventuras

A park with multiple cenotes connected by jungle paths. Kantun Chi offers a mix of open and cave cenotes, some with zip lines and platforms. The park is more polished than the community-run cenotes, with changing rooms, a restaurant, and guided tours available.

Activities: Multiple cenotes, zip lines, guided cave tours. Price: ~600–900 MXN. Location: Puerto Aventuras, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

Cenote Boca del Puma — Puerto Morelos

An eco-park near Cancún with zip lines, ATV rides, and cenote swimming. Boca del Puma targets the adventure tourism market with packages that combine multiple activities. The cenote itself is a pleasant cave swim, and the zip line circuit runs through the surrounding jungle.

Activities: Zip lines, ATV, cenote swim, rappelling. Price: ~1,500–2,500 MXN (full package). Location: Puerto Morelos, 30 minutes south of Cancún.

Cenote Selvatica — Puerto Morelos

One of the most popular adventure parks near Cancún. Selvatica offers a high-speed zip line circuit, cenote swimming, and off-road vehicle tours. The cenote is part of a larger experience rather than the main attraction, but the combination makes for a full day of activity.

Activities: Zip line circuit, cenote swim, off-road vehicles. Price: ~2,000–3,000 MXN (full package). Location: Puerto Morelos.

Cliff Jumping Cenotes

Not every cenote with a thrill requires a zip line. Several cenotes have natural or built platforms for jumping:

  • Cenote Tamcach-Ha (Cobá) — Platforms at 5m and 10m heights. The 10m jump into the deep cave cenote is not for the faint-hearted.
  • Cenote Ik Kil (Pisté) — Jumping platforms at the water level with a deep pool below.
  • Cenote Azul Bacalar (Bacalar) — Multiple cliff-jumping spots around the cenote edge.
  • Cenote Kin Ha (Puerto Morelos) — Platforms for jumping into the circular cenote.

Community vs. Commercial Parks

There's a meaningful difference between community-managed adventure cenotes and commercial parks:

Community-managed (X'Canché, Yokdzonot, Punta Laguna): Lower prices, more authentic atmosphere, revenue goes directly to Maya communities. Equipment is basic but safe. The cenote and natural setting are the focus.

Commercial parks (Aktun Chen, Selvatica, Boca del Puma): Higher prices, more polished operations, professional safety equipment. Multiple activities bundled into packages. The cenote is often one element of a broader experience.

Both are valid choices depending on your budget and what you're looking for. If you want an authentic cenote experience with an adventure twist, go community. If you want a full day of organised activities with lunch included, go commercial.
