Cenote Scuba Diving: A World Apart

Cenote diving is unlike any other diving experience in the world. The water is extraordinarily clear — often 100+ metre visibility — and you're swimming through cathedrals of stalactites and stalagmites formed over thousands of years. The Yucatán's Sistema Sac Actún is the longest known underwater cave system on Earth, at over 370 km of explored passages.

This guide covers the best cenotes for scuba diving, from accessible cavern dives suitable for advanced open water divers to world-class cave systems that attract the best cave divers on the planet.

Certifications Required

Cavern diving (within 40 metres of the entrance, natural light visible): Requires PADI Advanced Open Water or equivalent, plus a cavern diving specialty course.

Cave diving (beyond the cavern zone): Requires full cave diving certification. This is a multi-week, technically demanding course. Every year, certified open water divers enter cave systems without proper training and don't come out. Do not attempt cave diving without the certification.

Most cenote dive operators in Tulum and Playa del Carmen offer cavern courses and guided cavern dives.

Top Scuba Cenotes

Cenote Dos Ojos

Dos Ojos (Spanish for "Two Eyes") is the most accessible entry point to the massive Sac Actún system. The two main cenote chambers — connected underground — offer spectacular cavern dives past enormous stalactite formations. The "Bat Cave" chamber is legendary in the diving community.

Best for: First-time cavern divers, intermediate cave divers Certification required: Cavern certification for guided tours Location: Near Tulum, off Highway 307 Depth: Up to 10–12 metres in cavern zone

Cenote Car Wash (Aktun Ha)

Despite the unglamorous name, Car Wash is one of the most beautiful cenote dives you'll find. Lily pads on the surface give way to a crystal-clear underwater world. The cavern section is wide and well-lit with natural light, making it one of the most confidence-inspiring cavern dives for those new to cenote diving.

Best for: Cavern diving beginners, photography Depth: 5–10 metres in the main cavern area Location: Just north of Tulum on the road to Cobá

Cenote Angelita

This is one of the most dramatic and unusual cenotes in the Yucatán. At 30 metres depth, a hydrogen sulphide cloud creates the appearance of an underground river — a surreal, otherworldly landscape. This dive requires advanced diving skills and experience with narcosis. Not for beginners.

Best for: Technical divers, experienced advanced divers Depth: 60+ metres total; the hydrogen sulphide layer is at 30 metres Certification required: Advanced Open Water minimum; deep dive specialty recommended Location: South of Tulum

Sistema Sac Actún

For fully certified cave divers, Sac Actún is the ultimate Yucatán experience. The system has over 370 km of explored passages and is still being mapped. Entry points are scattered throughout the Tulum area. Dives must be arranged through accredited cave diving operators.

Best for: Certified cave divers Certification required: Full cave diving certification Location: Multiple access points around Tulum

Finding a Dive Operator

Reputable dive operators in Tulum include those affiliated with IANTD, NSS-CDS, and NACD — the main cave diving training agencies. Look for operators that require certification verification before any cave diving and provide proper briefings, safety lines, and equipment checks.
